New law makes Canadian Jews second-class citizens | Toronto Star
So here’s a terrifying implication of Canada’s new citizenship law that I’ve not heard anyone mention before.
I think this is reaching and assumes a lot. If the law says that a person who has double citizenship can have his Canadian citizenship revoked for terror-related acts it does not mean that it applies to people who possibly could get double citizenship. This would apply not only to Jews, but ANYBODY who POSSIBLY could get another citizenship.
Besides which, Israel could refuse to grant citizenship.
Actually, it means precisely this. According to the public statement against Bill C-24 by the Canadian Bar Association:
“Citizens who may be subject to citizenship revocation include those born in Canada who are presumed to be able to claim citizenship in another state through one of their parents, notwithstanding that the Canadian may have no ties with the other country at all.”
The Harper government is already trying to deport a Canadian citizen under this law. It is true that he was convicted of terrorist acts. That said, a) he was born in Canada and b) his parents, who were from Pakistan, renounced their previous citizenship. At the time his parents became Canadian citizens, Pakistan did not allow dual citizenship. That changed in 2004, so the Harper government is claiming that suffices to deport him.
If this deportation succeeds, the precedent is set.
Harper has also stated that he’s willing to consider expanding this law to other crimes, and he has zero qualms.
The Harper government is doing everything in its power to make Canadians afraid of their fellow citizens, to hurt us & strip us of our freedoms, to & keep us powerless and ignorant and unable to speak up against our government without consequences.
To put it bluntly, they are launching a campaign of political terrorism under the guise of ‘protecting’ us, and it’s fucking bullshit.
Vote in this election, if you are eligible to vote.
Vote for whatever party in your riding has the best shot of defeating the Conservative candidate, if it’s a close race, whether they are Liberal, Green, or NDP, because this kind of law is not a part of any Canada that any decent person should be a willing part of supporting.
Not ever.
Vote even if you have to wait in the advance polls. Vote even if you think your vote won’t matter, because it does.
Vote for a Canada that is willing to make some claim of treating its citizens with respect & dignity & equality, because that is not the Canada that we have under Stephen fucking Harper.
Please, I’m literally begging you to vote.
