Idris Elba: Speech on diversity in the media and film

I’m here to talk about diversity. Diversity in the modern world is more than just skin colour. It’s gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, social background, and - most important of all, as far as I’m concerned – diversity of thought. Because if you have genuine diversity of thought among people making TV & film, then you won’t accidentally shut out any of the groups I just mentioned.

I thought LGBT people and allies around the world might want to know about what’s going on in Italy at the moment.

You probably know that the current situation for same sex couples in this country isn’t the brightest. Pretty much no recognition. At all.
Now, the government is finally working on a law for registered partnerships that would guarantee some rights to couples and the so-called “stepchild adoption” – though this point, still different from a “full” adoption, is really controversial and could undergo changes.

Opposition came quickly and the most traditionalist side of the country (mainly catholics) organized a “Family Day” to protest against the law – which will be discussed on January 28.
But LGBT associations are going to respond. They are all joining forces. They organized manifestations on the exact same day chosen by the traditionalist protestants, January 23 (turning the Family Day into a Family Gay) in 72 different cities all over Italy. And still counting. IT’S GONNA BE HUGE.

So Italy is going to look like this:

We really want to make our voices heard. We are tired of being invisible.
This is still so far from marriage equality, so far from what many other European countries have achieved. We are stil very far behind, and it’s just not fair.
But all those red marks stand for squares that will be crammed with people. All on the same day. All asking for equality. All over the country.
And they won’t be able to ignore us anymore.

I wouldn’t usually ask this, but in this case I’d appreciate if people shared this to let everyone know what’s going on in this country.

Gay marriage might have been legalized in the US and in other European countries, but here it feels like we’ll never even have partnership rights :/ this isn’t even the first time it’s been attempted and it’s always been refused for ridiculous reasons.

As always, Italy stands out for lagging behind when it comes to LGBT rights…

PS: Here (in Italian) is a list of the places where it’s organized if anyone who is in the country wants to participate.

…going to the hardware store for milk.

Quote of the day: STOP GOING TO THE HARDWARE STORE FOR MILK. “I was introduced to this expression the other day by a friend of this page and I’m in love with it already. Please interpret as you like, as it applies to your own life. Is there a love relationship that isn’t working out for you, because you keep trying to get milk from that hardware store — and all they offer is hammers and drills? Is there a job that isn’t working out for you, because you keep wandering the aisles of that hardware store, looking for milk, and coming up with…well…screws? Is there a spiritual or religious path that has become frustrating for you, because every time you ask them for sweet, sweet milk, they merely direct you to the section of the store that sells plumbing equipment and padlocks? Is there a city that you can’t stand living in anymore, because they simply don’t sell the kind of milk there that you need? Do you find yourself getting angry at the hardware store (whatever “hardware store” may represent for you) for never having milk — instead of asking yourself why you keep searching for milk at a place that never gives you anything but cans of paint-thinner and turpentine? Is it maybe time to stop going to the hardware store for milk? Is it time to admit this isn’t working? Is it maybe time to find your nourishment elsewhere? DISCUSS.“ (Thank you Elizabeth Gilbert)

Flint poisoned Joe’s water, so he built a filtration system to make it drinkable

Joe and Shirley Love, both 60, have lived in Flint for years and felt the effects of the water crisis firsthand. “I started having trouble with this right eye,” Shirley Love told Mic. “When I get something in my eye, I splash it with a face bowl of water. I do that all the time. But now my eye itches, it hurts, it’s blurry.”

So Joe Love took matters into his own hands and built a DIY filtering system, using reverse osmosis to remove waste from the city’s water.

The year is 1995, congress member Bernie Sanders stands in opposition of a homophobic statement said by Duke Cunningham. Cunningham derisively refers to “homos in the military” to support his argument while (strangely) discussing the Clean Water Act. Sanders, having none of it, quickly rises to the defense of thousands of men and women everywhere. Sanders ire is such that he repeatedly disrespects the Chairman by speaking over him in order to say his piece. [Video Source]

What does this say for Sanders? Well, that’s for you to decide. But to me, it says that for 20+ years strong he has shown his public support for LGBT+ persons everywhere, even in the face of ridicule and disrespect. Unlike some, Sanders has always been vocal about his beliefs concerning the LGBT+ community, and he has always held them. Key word always, and not just when doing so might garner him support for his campaigns.
