Years ago, @asklacesecretmodblog‘s brother acquired a kitten he named Katrina and the family also had parakeets who lived in a cage at the top of the stairs leading to the kitchen. Bear in mind, this is a suspended cage. It hangs from the ceiling.
One morning, their dad gets up, heads for the kitchen to make coffee, gets to the stairs and then doubles back to the cage.
On one side of the cage are the birds, dead silent. On the other side, clinging to the outside of the cage, is Katrina.
It took me like 20 years of my life to realize that the punchline to “Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side” was a pun about death and not a cruel commentary on how most jokes are just unfunny.
