Wow I am still incredibly enraged about this, so let’s talk.
So I was watching a hockey game yesterday featuring my second favourite team, the Washington Capitals. They were playing one of their rivals, a team who is led by a man who, rightly or wrongly, is constantly marketed as the “best player and face of the NHL”. I don’t care whether or not you think he deserves that rep. What irritates the fuck out of me is that he is constantly mocked and taunted for being “soft” and a “crybaby” (he really isn’t, but again, besides the point), and the all-time favourite, SUPER WITTY joke of fans of practically every other team is to twist his name from Sidney Crosby to “Sydney Crysby”, or “Cindy Crybaby” or something along those lines. Yeah.
Yesterday, this game between rivals very quickly turned into a shitshow, fights broke out on the ice, and immediately after the scrum, this utter gem appeared on the official Washington Capitals account:
“Crosby throwing punches at Oshie. Big surprise who ends up on their back… #CapsPens #RockTheRed” (https://twitter.com/washcaps/status/711697547354632192)
And it was one tweet. One tiny tweet out of trillions. It shouldn’t be a big deal. But context matters, and the context is that it was one more fucking pebble to add to the fucking avalanche of homophobic, sexist, and misogynistic “jokes” that come from media, fans, and players alike. It was one more thing to add to the fact that up until last year, there was no professional women’s hockey league. That women’s leagues in every sport are paid a pittance compared to their male counterparts. That OLYMPIC MEDALLISTS have had to debate over whether to give their gear to the Hall of Fame when requested, because they could barely afford new gear. That famous female athletes like Serena Williams are constantly criticised for their looks, as though that matters one whit to their ability to play. That the efforts of female athletes are constantly put down despite the fact that they frequently work harder than the men (yeah, I said it; you try juggling an Olympian’s training schedule with a day job, a day job that you have to have because again, they refuse to pay you). That domestic violence and sexual assault is horribly, depressingly frequent in professional sports.
That in the world of professional men’s sports, there are vanishingly few figures who dare to be “out” about any sexual orientation other than “straight”. That in the National Hockey League, there are none, even if you damn well know that statistically speaking, there have to be SOME.
That one tweet was yet one more reminder in a whole slew of constant reminders that in society in general and sports in particular, women are valued less (I’m not even going to go into about how the LGBTQ community is valued because it will drive me to drink). That they are perfectly fine with taking our money, but that really when it comes down to it, they don’t really care about us. That it’s an INSULT to be compared to a woman, to have any feminine traits at all. And to have that reminder come from an OFFICIAL TEAM ACCOUNT of a team that I like was just a slap in the face.
Guys, if you think that women don’t like sports, don’t like geeky things like gaming, don’t like science or maths, don’t like [insert whatever bullshit thing you can think of here], you are wrong. There are so many of us. But if there are fewer, this, THIS is why. Because we are told CONSTANTLY, in all sorts of ways and on all sorts of levels that we are not welcome.
