Friendly reminder that working mostly on commissions doesn’t make you any less of an artist. The Mona Lisa was commissioned. Michelangelo’s David was commissioned. Indeed, the vast majority of what’s considered great art throughout history is commissioned work. The notion that a “real” artist works solely in pursuit of their own inspirations without concern for reward is both ahistorical and classist as hell, insofar as it serves to argue that only the independently wealthy should be allowed to create art.
