Borago officinalis is in the family Boraginaceae. Commonly known as borage or starflower, it is native to the Meditteranean but is naturalized throughout much of Europe. Borage is a cultivated herb that has been cultivated for thousands of years. There are records of its use as an herbal remedy and supplement since the time of Pliny in Greece. The leaves and flowers are edible and are traditionally used in salads because of their high essential fatty acid content. Borage contains the fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and overall health benefits. Borage is also a major attractor to bees, which can be seen visiting this species all throughout the summer months.
