I always feel like the “lol dashcon” posts are missing something when they neglect to mention that the ball pit and bounce house weren’t provided by the con. Some anonymous attendees arrived, realized there was nothing there, and decided they would personally shell out for at least a little tiny bit of party-scale entertainment.

Like, those two things weren’t pathetic attempts by the organizers to save face, those were guests trying to improve the shitshow that was Dashcon, and it really puts the utter failure of that con hall being empty except for those two into a whole new perspective to consider that.

Just. for reference. a short list of things that are required for a space to actually be accessible:

  • there must be ramps
  • there must be elevators
  • the event must be indoors/out of sunlight or intense weather (both hot and cold)
  • the event has to be within two blocks of accessible public transit (if in a city with public transit) or options for accessible transport to and from the event
  • there must be seating
  • it must be low-scent to the best of everyones abilities
  • any food provided should be clearly labeled for allergens
  • there cant be any flashing lights or extremely loud noises
  • anything spoken should have interpreters or the transcript of what was said should be available as text
  • anything visual should have descriptive audio
  • anything with audio should also have captions
  • anything written should have large, readable text options
  • anything written should also have the option to be requested in braille

yknow and im probably missing things so feel free to add more but its like. accessibility is so much more than “ramps and maybe captions”

If I hear ableism being justified with good intentions again I am going to flip my shit. I don’t care if it is good intentions. Usually it is good intentions. My fight is not towards mainly bad intentions.

Ableism is so intwined with our daily lives it’s sickening. It has its claws on our vocabulary, way of thinking, and every second of our being from birth. That is what I am fighting.

If I correct someone, or bring up something, I don’t care if it’s good intentions. I just want it to be noticed, and I want it to stop, because intention does not dictate my emotions.

I will be upset. If you are incorrect or say something ableist, whether you knew it was ableist or not, it will hurt me. That will not change just because you didn’t know better.

I am not mad at you if you didn’t know, I am mad at the ableism that caused the misconception in the first place, and I am mad at the construct that allows ableism to exist without consequences.

So don’t get angry because your good intentions are being ignored. Listen, learn, and change. It isn’t about you. It’s about the ableism in your actions and words. The ableism that was taught to you, and me, and everyone growing up in this fucked up world.
