I just… wanna remind people that asexuality was classed as a mental disorder by the DSM all the way up until 2013…. Because I feel like people don’t know this or like to ignore it because it doesn’t fit into their “asexual people don’t face discrimination” rhetoric.
Asexuality was only removed from the DSM in 2013. Please, know this and remember it.
I know I’m nowhere near the first person to add this comment, but here this is on my dash without, so:
The diagnoses in question still haven’t been removed from the DSM. In 2013, they added a caveat to the effect of, “but if they already ID as asexual, don’t worry about it.” Anyone who hasn’t yet been exposed to the language they need? Still pathologized. Still at risk of medical abuse and conversion therapy. This is why visibility is such a goddamn huge priority for aces, and why I have less than zero time for anybody who tries to minimize that with their masturbatory discourse about Real Oppression™.
Every time minorities on tv get killed off, showrunner keep trying to make excuses by telling us they died to ‘further the story’.
What they’re really saying is “This was never your story.
You’re not the hero.
Even if you thought you were.
Even if you thought you could be.
It’s never going to be about your struggle, your journey, your feelings, your triumphs.
It’s never going to be about that, because you don’t matter enough to have that.
You’re just a tool in someone else’s life.
You’re disposable.
We can lose you, and things will be better off for it.
It was never your story, and it never will be.”
And, again, if you can’t understand how damaging it is for marginalized people to constantly have that be the message they get from media creators, idk what else to say, really.
we need more women of colour as main female leads and they need to be treated as main female characters throughout instead of being sidelined later on for white characters and just generally ignored and treated like crap by the writers, the fandom and even the pr departments.
The PM of Canada understands quantum mechanics, and here in the States half the people in the running for President don’t even understand why forcing people to use the wrong bathroom is reprehensible, or that brown people are you know, people…
