That Midwest feel: When the tornado sirens go off and you panic for a second before remembering “Oh, it’s Wednesday”
what does this mean
It means it’s Wednesday, bro. If a tornado hits on a Wednesday it can’t hurt you. Those are the rules.
- What people think it means when we say "Language is evolving": This pejorative term isn't bad anymore because it's funny to me and I say so.
- What it actually means when we say "Language is evolving": English has developed a specific verb for tricking people into listening to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up"

Dad keeps sharing random facts about bees
- To treat common mites, beekeepers coat their bees in powdered sugar. This kills the mites but doesn’t hurt the bees, and they will clean it off anyway. It does, however, make them look like tiny bee ghosts until they groom themselves.
- Skunks are natural predators of bees. They will grab a mouthful of bees and suck the juices out before spitting out the bees’ carcasses. To keep the skunks from doing this, beekeepers will build their hives high enough that the skunks have to reach their front paws up to get to the hives. This way, their bellies are exposed and the bees are able to fight back and sting them. Either way, bees die.
- Bees are curious, and they may follow you around for a while just to see what you’re doing. Most bees will trail you for a yard or two, but one breed will stalk you for up to half a mile.
*** bees are curious** that is adorable omg
I would be interested in seeing a skunk grab a mouthful of bees. And i like how bees went from curious to stalking real quick
Issa Rae Raised More Than $200,000 for Alton Sterling’s Family in Just 9 Hours
“On Wednesday, Awkward Black Girl and Insecure writer/actress Issa Rae tweeted about wanting to start a scholarship fund for Sterling’s surviving children, explaining, “Some of us feel helpless when these things happen, but that’s a small step.” She then got in contact with the family’s lawyer and started a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $200,000 for all of Sterling’s children. As Rae proudly noted just nine hours later, the goal had already been met. At time of publication, the donations are closing in on $300,000, with every dollar going to Sterling’s family.“
As I’m posting this donations are at $391,587.
This is from one of our Identities writers, Zak Cheney Rice. Felt it was important to share today. Similarly, some black men are reflecting on the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile with instructions on what to do if they’re shot by police.

Police shoot and kill Philando Castile, his girlfriend live streams aftermath on Facebook
32-year-old black man Philando Castile died in the hospital Wednesday night after being shot by police in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, during a traffic stop. The aftermath was captured live on Facebook video by his girlfriend, Lavish Reynolds. “We got pulled over for a busted taillight in the back,” Reynolds says in the video. “The police just, just…he’s covered.“
“He’s licensed to carry,” Reynolds explains, “He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet out his pocket, and he let the officer know that he had a firearm, and he was reaching for his wallet, and the officer just shot him in his arm.” The video is extremely graphic, read more for a full description.
Update: Although the demand for answers is only getting louder, based on police union contracts and police bill of rights legislation, the name of the officer who fatally shot Castile isn’t likely to be released anytime soon.
Update: Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has issued a statement on Philando Castile. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has initiated an independent investigation at the state level, according to Dayton’s statement. But Dayton is going even higher to get to the bottom of all this.
Update: Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton doesn’t think Philando Castile would have been shot to death if he had been white. At a press conference on Thursday, Dayton addressed the death of Castile: “Would this have happened if the driver or passenger had been white? I don’t think it would have,” Dayton said.
