‘My Hijab Has Nothing To Do With Oppression. It’s A Feminist Statement’

Not all Muslim women cover their bodies. Not all Muslim women who do are forced to do so. Like freelance writer Hanna Yusuf, who chooses to wear a hijab in a daily act of feminism. In a new video for The Guardian, Yusuf challenges stereotypes by setting out to reclaim the choice to wear a hijab as “a feminist statement.”

For more on on how the hijab helps women reclaim their bodies watch the full video here.

“To try and attain the unattainable”*

I am not Muslim but I am so glad to see this because honestly I had never ever thought about it this way, I feel like I’ve been so ignorant, my eyes and mind have been opened

“The liberation lies in the choice.”

Remembering Chávez Ravine

Current Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium in Chávez Ravine stands over what was once a thriving Mexican community. Palo Verde, La Loma and Bishop were some of the barrios demolished by developers as part of the Dodgers’ relocation from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958.

The trauma experienced by those evicted was felt by many for their entire lives. Although almost all have passed away, several of the survivors and their families still gather for an annual reunion in Los Angeles.

Their bond to Chávez Ravine is strong, and for many, the Dodgers’ presence in the place where they were born and raised is physically painful.

“There’s an old Mexican custom that where you’re born, the umbilical cord is buried. Mine’s buried under third base,” Lou Santillán, an eviction survivor, told the LA Times in 2012. “And I hate home runs, ‘cause every time they step on third base, my stomach hurts.”

Colin Kaepernick’s National Anthem protest continues to spread like wildfire

Naysayers doubting the staying power of Colin Kaepernick’s protest got more proof over the weekend that taking a knee during the national anthem is attracting more and more supporters.

From school sporting events to the opening of the new National African American museum in D.C., people are kneeling and raising their fists. Kaepernick himself gave visited and then gave a rousing speech to high school football players in Oakland.

Vote Hillary Clinton for President

I am not watching the debate. I tried. I found a livestream of it. I watched for like ten minutes. That was all I could take.

Please for the love of everything, vote for Hillary. Can you imagine having to listen to Trump talk out of his ass in a official capacity while representing you for four fucking years???

Don’t do it, America. Please.

Take careful note, folks. Hillary is silently screaming. Her little nods are self-soothing, telling herself that she can get through this without throwing herself bodily at this burbling windbag and removing his windpipe with her teeth.
