As summer turns to fall, what better way to welcome the new season than to carve pumpkins! Pumpkins are known scientifically as Cucurbita pepo in the family Cucurbitaceae which includes other gourds such as watermelon, cucumber, squash, and zucchini. Botanically, pumpkins are berries, which are defined as a fleshy fruit with numerous seeds. More specifically, a pumpkin is known as a pepo, which is a berry with a thick outer surface. Most berries are relatively small, only growing to be a few inches across, but pumpkins and their relatives can grow to be some of the largest berries in the plant kingdom!
