so it looks like the safety pin thing has been co-opted by white supremacists. we need other, better ways to show solidarity anyway. wear an “i’ll go with you” pin, if you want that badly to wear a pin, or better yet, stand up for marginalized folks when you see them being harassed (online and irl). join an organization, volunteer your time, donate money, join a protest, if you’re able. wear a “black lives matter” or a “not my president” t shirt. there are so many ways to show solidarity and we need to get started now.
Jesus, that was fast.
To the millions of Muslim, LGBTQ, women, all People of Color, disabled and immigrant humans living in fear in America right now: I stand with you. I love you. We will endure. “They tried to bury us. They didn’t know we were seeds.” Take that sign to heart. We will continue to grow. Stand up for each other always. Stand up against the hate that is here and that is to come. We will push back by coming together. We will make it. You are valid, you are strong, you belong here, you belong here, you belong here.
In 2010 I saw a nation fall apart while I watched, saw it riot, saw it burn. I came home, looked around, and realized I was back at the start of that. I went to law school so I could help. I went to law school to claw back any piece of safety I could. I went to law school so I could get involved in politics and try to avert disaster. I graduated law school. Here we are.
Please. Get involved. Please. Don’t let me fight alone.
Don’t split votes. Don’t refuse to vote. Fucking vote. Vote on referendums, for local government, for judges in local courts. Do your homework and vote.
78 years ago today my great grandfather fled Germany. It was Kristallnacht. He warned me, when I was little, that it would happen again. That facism wasn’t dead. That in hard economic times, fools look to whoever will scream the loudest and give them a sacrificial scapegoat. He was right.
Don’t let this happen again. Don’t remain passive. Don’t turn a blind eye. Hold your politicians accountable. They do not rule us, they serve at our pleasure. If we are not pleased, they do not have the right to serve. If we are not pleased, we don’t have to take it. Speak up! Impeach people! Demand criminal investigations of rapists and tax evaders! Demand that the law be upheld!
And always, always remember that just because you can hide for now, that doesn’t mean that you should be silent.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

God, that last picture though…
Thousands of protesters march against Trump across the country
Protesters took to the streets Wednesday night across the U.S. to mount a rallying cry against Donald Trump’s imminent presidency. In New York City, thousands marched from Union Square to Trump Tower in Midtown. Chicago, Washington, D.C., Seattle and Boston also saw large protests. Video shows their emotional displays and powerful rallying cries.
Dear white people: America is not post racial. Never has been. And I’m here to tell you that you need to step up your game. Big time. Stop sugar coating racism. Stop equivocating. Stop parsing your words to avoid hurting white people’s delicate, fragile feelings. Say the actual words. Call out racism. Call out sexism and misogyny; call out Islamophobia; call out ableism…call it all out.
Call things what they are. Flowery sounding euphemisms may make white people feel better, but that only makes life worse for everyone else. Stop equivocating. Stop trying to be so damn “moderate” all the time.
Moderation in the defense of justice is no virtue.
