Veterans Ask Native Elders For Forgiveness At Standing Rock.

I never thought I would see this day when a white man apologizes for the tyranny and oppression of Native American population. This is so powerful. This is the nation that I want - responsible, compassionate and that learns from its mistakes.

God bless them!

Few things about DAPL if you haven’t heard

Army Engineers said no to a permit. Doesn’t mean that DAPL can’t keep drilling and just pay the fines. 50K a day in fines is nothing for a company like them to brush off.

They could literally just wait, and lose money of course, until Trump gets into office and streamlines the project. He could just use the Federal government’s powers over interstate commerce to get it put through.

This is part of a colonial frontier war against the original peoples and the land

Celebrate a victory but don’t fall for the State’s trick. This is far from over.

“Yet even as men and women began drumming and dancing around the fire, many Native Americans were unconvinced that Sunday’s news was the end.

“It’s not over. It’s never over,” said a Standing Rock member who gave his name as Ghost. “They say one thing and do another.”

DAPL and Energy Transfer Partners are planning to continue construction, permits or no. They released a statement to that effect.

GO 👏 THE 👏 FUCK 👏 OFF. Also, the American educational system is trash. I applaud this child’s parents for giving her a voice and standing up against bias authority.

(Can someone caption this?)

Classroom full of mostly black and brown students:

Black student: [unintelligible—and then]  …and then throwing everything away beneath it because it doesn’t pertain to you. I’m sorry —

White teacher: —you know what, I’m sorry -I’m sorry…

Black student: —No, no, no…I let you talk -I let you talk, you’re gonna let me talk.

[Other students gasps]

White student: Go ahead. Finish.

Black student: I’m sorry that this is the way that it is. You’re right, it is fucked up. But white people control everything…and that’s not fair. And when anybody, any other minority tries to say anything about it or change it, we’re complaining or we’re ungrateful or all this other stuff because we still have this or that. But then you say something about ‘Oh, I don’t want—there’s too many Latinos and there’s too many—’

White teacher: I didn’t say that—

[Various students disagree]

White teacher: I said I want to control the border!

Black student: You said you don’t want this to turn into a Latin country because there’ll be too many

White teacher: I did not say that.

[Various students disagree]

Student 2: You said you want to preserve the American culture.

Black student: There is no American culture. American culture is EVERYTHING.

[Various students agree]

Random: Mayonnaise!

[Students laugh]

Black student: And because you are white and so closed-minded, you refuse to accept that, you refuse to accept—

White teacher: Don’t tell me I’m closed-minded—

Black student: Everything you’ve said to me is closed-minded.

White teacher: Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean I’m closed-minded.

Black student: You don’t need to agree—I -I’ve had conversations with people that don’t agree with me, but if they at least listen and try to accept—you’re not accepting the truth.

White teacher: Why do I have to accept what you think is right?

Black student: You need to accept the truth! Not what I think is right, what is actually happening right—

White teacher: Well, let me tell you what I think. You said white people have been in control of everything….who is the president of the United States right now?!

Students: A black man!

*Various sounds of incredulity*

Black student: WITH A WHITE CONGRESS! WITH A WHITE SENATE! WITH WHITE EVERYTHING ELSE! HE DOESN’T HAVE THE CONTROL OF EVERYTHING!

Random: GO OFF

Other Random: GO OFF–

*The class is in an uproar*

Random student: YOU ARE SO PRIVILEGED THAT YOU JUST DON’T SEE IT!

White teacher: Do we have to yell?!

Black student: Yes, because I’m mad.

I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again:

You cannot challenge racism, on this level, by being nice to and reaching out to white supremacists.  Their entire ideology revolves around dehumanizing us.  It just does. not. work.

You cannot fight fascism by prioritizing the feelings of fascists and letting them think they’re safe around you.  You don’t “get them on your side”.  Because treating them kindly and respecting them, gives them your silent approval and access to those of you who are way more vulnerable than you are and who cannot afford to feel safe enough to “debate” with these monsters.

Our humanity is not a question or a debate topic, and by giving these people a platform you legitimize their views and help spread them to a larger audience.

Then… How did it work for this guy?

They shot him in the fucking head.

Say that shit again!

They shot him in the fucking head.

They shot him in the fucking head.

They shot him in the fucking head.

They shot him in the fucking head.

The idea that MLK was ‘nice’ to white supremacists is also just historical revisionism @kuurihaunt.

He was sent death threats. The FBI considered him dangerous. People assaulted and murdered many of his followers. White America thought he was too confrontational and not appeasing enough to the sensibilities of whites. He was considered disruptive and an “outside agitator.” He was not a beloved man. He was hated and despised.

His protests came with the risk of being brutalized or killed by police or vigilantes. He decried the white moderate for caring more about order than justice. He refused to condemn riots, ‘the language of the unheard,’ because of how violent America was to Black people. Despite their differences, Malcolm X offered him protection and self-defense. Even though he was committed to nonviolent resistance, which meant breaking the law, disrupting traffic and yes - willingly opening yourself to being brutalized, he was more complicated than you give him credit.

The United States hated him and for his troubles he was killed.

He was not the caricature of nonviolence you think he was. Read a fucking book.

“As I’ve written now several times, I continue to believe we are collectively doing a disservice to the truth by speaking of ‘conflicts’ and ‘complications that seems certain to persist.’ There are no conflicts and complications. The Trumps are using the presidency to advance … ‘advance’ is insufficient … to warp drive their business to a realm it has never been in before and never would have been. We know they are currently advancing major new business ventures in numerous foreign countries, all of which need to manage a positive relationship with the United States and its head of state.”

Not a surprise at this point, but the Post has a story explaining that Trump’s call withe the President of Taiwan was planned in advanced by staff on both sides. (via wilwheaton)

I have seen a number of harry potter posts that go something like, “If there was magic and wizards in (country) they’d _____.”  Usually there are also long discussions that go along with these about how each country deals with the statute of secrecy.

And all I can think is, Canada wouldn’t even bother trying to enforce the statute of secrecy. Because what is the point? How would you even know if it was a magic thing or just a Canada thing?

Is that guy just taking a regular old moose through a drive thru to get coffee or is it animagus?

Was that prime minister crazy or did he actually talk to ghosts?

How do you steal 20 000 litres of maple syrup? Trucks or portkeys?

The minister of immigration formally gave Santa Claus citizenship and a passport.

House hippos.

All magic would do to Canada is make the internet about 90% more sure that Canada isn’t a real place.

That would explain a few things.

Bannon’s website is threatening to sue a “major media organization” over calling it a white nationalist. “Breitbart News Network, a pro-America, conservative website, is preparing a multi-million dollar lawsuit against a major media company for its baseless and defamatory claim that Breitbart News is a ‘white nationalist website,’” reads the statement sent to the Hill. Rather than real news, this threat is essentially a way for Breitbart.com to try to influence the narrative. Whether or not there is any basis to such a lawsuit  — it’s doubtful that the private correspondence of the website would withstand the scrutiny of discovery, and many prominent lawyers have vowed to fight such libel cases — isn’t the point; this will create a chilling effect among an already-weakened media, post Gawker demise, who don’t have the bandwidth to fight back.

In fact, it’s already happened. Think Progress describes headlines using words like “loyalist” and “outsider” for Bannon, while a NPR interview with a Breitbart writer soft-pedaled him on the matter of racial ideology. Even the New York Times, which has been excellent at covering Bannon’s views, has gone for words like “populist” and “firebrand” to describe him in headlines.
