you could be lactose intolerant with celiac disease and allergic to a million different things and you could get a replicator to make you a delicious milk chocolate peanut butter cake that wouldn’t trigger any of your dietary sensitivities whatsoever

it just has to mimic the flavors and textures of the milk chocolate, the peanut butter, and the cake to achieve the dessert

no one said it had to include any of the exact ingredients - the replicator uses otherworldly substitutes and non-triggering chemical compounds to automatically tailor things to whatever dietary requirements you, or the ship’s doctor, put into the system

honestly you could even order a chocolate sundae and specify it include all the nutrition of a balanced meal and it could still taste like a chocolate sundae BECAUSE SCIENCE (yeah deanna u can eat all the chocolate sundaes u want. TREAT YO SELF.)

I’ve never done a blackout day before, but since I heard this blackout is focusing a bit more on business I got a little motivated. I don’t know of any other black people who do what I do, armour making is a pretty white field. But I’ve loved medieval history and fantasy since I was a kid, so why not do what I want right?

The dictionary took seven years. Marie worked on it constantly, sometimes until late at night, writing down remembered words on scraps of paper and typing them up slowly and carefully. Now she and her daughter hold weekly Wukchumni language classes, and she’s recording an audio version of the dictionary with her grandson.

The video and accompanying high school lesson plan seem like a decent introduction to language revitalization, although I’d add a small preemptive caution: I’ve heard from people involved in language revitalization that many aren’t too fond of death metaphors like “dying”, “disappearing”, “extinct”, “saving”, and so on. Words like “endangered”, “struggling”, “precarious”, “sleeping”, and “revitalizing” emphasize the agency of the communities involved, even in the case where a language is brought back into speech from writings and recordings.

Yep, talking about a language in terms of “dying” or “disappering” isnt helpful and creates a false sense of inevitability, which is the last thing u need for successful revitalization. Also it fucking hurts those who speak it because that language is alive in them right now - Not Dead.

I’m not tryna prove you wrong I genuinely want to know, even though we have never met, why my skin colour (or lack of) makes you hate me

Because no matter how many times POC have been subjected to racism at the hands of whites, individual whites are more upset at being referred to as “white” & being lumped in with racists than the fact that white racists exist.

You are more concerned with getting an Exemption than really care about the fact that POC are discriminated against for not being white.

But whites think it’s racist to talk about the harmful behavior that whites perpetrate, they think that only saying the n-word and being a member of the KKK is what makes someone racist.

Because no matter how many of us are killed, you think your feelings getting hurt is more of a problem than anything else.

If you were truly “not racist” , you would understand that this isn’t about you, that we are talking about the white racists that *do* exist.

But you don’t actually care at all, you just want to say “well not me!!!” Even though you’re a complete stranger, we are supposed to just take your word for it.

But you’re gonna tell us “not all whites” and then say this is “just as bad as racism” and it “goes both ways” even though we all know it doesn’t.

But you’re different right?

Here’s an Otocolobus manul – nature’s Grumpy Cat – discovering a camera trap outside it’s den. Camera traps are used by biologists to lean about rare animals’ behavior, abundance, and health – just by setting up a solar-powered camera with a motion trigger. No physical trapping necessary.

O. manul (also known as Pallas’s cat) is about the size of a house cat, but you’ll notice has round pupils instead of slits. It lives in western China and the steppes of Central Asia.

You’d think that Pallas’s cat would rule the internet by now - but there aren’t too many photos of them because they are both rare and shy. The IUCN lists them as near-threatened. Just another reason to support species conservation!

You can surround your white main characters by people of color and call it diversity, but is it really? Diversity is such a buzzword these days. We talk about it all the time, and as it gets discussed more and more, white writers have seen it not as something to actually strive for, but as an opportunity. The 100 was praised for its diverse cast, yet it has treated both its actors and characters of color terribly. It focuses on the white protagonists and their journeys, while using people of color as props and killing them off or torturing them for shock value. But technically, it is still diverse. Sense8, another show hailed as diverse, utilizes many racist and stereotypical tropes for its characters of color, while focusing the narratives on its white characters. Sleepy Hollow marketed itself with its diverse cast, including a black woman as the main character, yet it continued to focus on its white characters until the main actress actually quit due to the lack of development and screen time for her own character. But again, it is still diverse. 

Maybe it’s time that we stop focusing on diversity, because obviously we’re missing the point. Diversity is not having a certain amount of people of color in your cast. Diversity doesn’t matter if the story is still primarily about white people.
