picture submitted by one of the brave people that today were counter-demonstrating that swedsih nazis were marching outside a synagogue in göteborg. swedish nazis had been allowed to do this march on yom kippur by göteborg city. the counter-demonstrant were there to try to, well not allow nazis hang out right next to a synagogue on yom kippur. and also of course to protest the growth of nazism in current day sweden.

Holy shit.

In the fourth grade, we had to pick an inventor, dress like the inventor, and explain our invention. I decided to pick something off the wall (instead of, like, a light bulb), so I ended up doing my little presentation as George Crum. I remember reading about his work as a chef, learning about his shortness with customers, and the interaction (possibly apocryphal, although Crum certainly invented the potato chip) with the diner who kept complaining about his home fries being too thick.

I literally made a presentation as this man, and used a few websites and a couple encyclopediae (yeah, I’m old) to source all the data. I certainly know more than most people do about George Crum.

The point of all this is that, until I came across this post on Tumblr, I had absolutely no idea he was black. I’ve known who Crum was for over twenty years and never knew his race, because no website or encyclopedia thought it was worth mentioning.

Oh wow I am so incredibly shocked. Are you telling me that our entire agricultural infrastructure was predicated on the exploitation of foreign-born workers who were forced to live in inhumane living conditions and paid next to nothing? And that now that this presidency has created an extremely hostile environment that those immigrants are going elsewhere? Causing a shortage of cheap exploitable labor? Who could have seen this coming??????

THIS! They could have been paying migrant workers fair wages. Excuse me if I don’t feel sorry for them now.
