The problem with liberals always repeating that Voltaire “i disagree but I’ll fight to the death for their right to say it” shit is that often times they are not fighting to their death, they’re fighting to mine and others
“The last time I checked my textbooks, the specific therapy for malnutrition was food”
“In 1965 Dr. Geiger founded one of the first two community health centers in this country, in a brutally poor area in the Mississippi Delta. And so many of his patients came in presenting with malnutrition that be began prescribing food for them. And they would take these prescriptions to the local supermarket, which would fill them and then charge the pharmacy budget of the clinic. And when the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington, D.C. – which was funding Geiger’s clinic – found out about this, they were furious. And they sent this bureaucrat down to tell Geiger that he was expected to use their dollars for medical care – to which Geiger famously and logically responded, “The last time I checked my textbooks, the specific therapy for malnutrition was food.“”
In case y'all thought Hebrew was an easy language
(Those tiny points around the letters appear only in children’s books btw)
those dots and dashes being the VOWELS, which only appear for children and language-learners
This seems like a good time to ask… why? Is there a reason why the vowels are omitted from most texts, given that there’s a system to indicate them? *curious*
Is this is unique to a certain language system? Tolkien’s made-up tengwar does a similar thing…
arabic does this too! i’ll let hebrew speakers explain theirs, but the explanation is simply that if you’re a fluent arabic speaker, the written forms and usage will provide the (non-textual) context that guides your pronunciation. what i mean by written forms for arabic is that every letter actually has a different morphology depending on their position in a word. kinda like… how… mm… the roman R in cursive changes forms depending on its position. tht helps a lot, i think. in any case, in regular practice, you do see the arabic vowel marks (depending on romanisation, is called harakah/harakat/harkat) appear regularly as a standard in quranic editions for non-arabic-using muslims. like, i grew up reading the ‘al-qur’an mashaf malaysia’ and thinking i was hot shit, and then i found my grandma’s pakistani one AND I DIED. lmao.
Semitic languages are like, reading: expert death mode.
The Hebrew vowels were only invented in the 8-9th century. There were a few versions vying for dominance. The Tiberias method won.
A Torah scroll is of course written with no vowels and no punctuation, as the traditional version was set long before these things were invented.
This kind of alphabet is called an Abgad or Abjad (because usually the order of the letters is “A” B G D - A here representing aleph and not the A vowel sound). Hebrew is not the only one, as @horusporus said, I believe a few Semitic/middle-eastern languages have abjads.
You may have noticed that the Greek alphabet actually follows the ABGD form. If I’m not mistaken Greek was the first Mediterranean language to take “consonant” letters from the abjad form and turn them into vowel letters (Alpha = “A” rather than a placeholder for any vowel sound, for example).
that’s so neat because ‘abjad’ in malay is an arabic loanword to mean ‘alphabet’ :D
holy fuck how many more people have to die until some of y'all to realize we NEED gun regulations. gun violence is a legitimate problem that is terrorizing the most safe environments and people still wanna brag about that “2nd amendment” bullshit. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE REAL ISSUE HERE
I don’t think anyone with a sense of morality wants to wake up to news of a record-breaking mass shooting, but unfortunately that’s a reality in America since our government doesn’t wanna do shit about gun control. none of this shit should be normalized!!
this shooting was just now declared the deadliest mass shooting in U.S HISTORY.….I don’t think anyone wants to hear their loved one was killed or injured during an event they thought was safe. there are so many deadly factors that go into the failures of gun regulation and lives are constantly on the fucking line.
I honestly don’t get these fucking gun nuts! ‘People kill people not guns’ BULLSHIT! In the UK & other EU countries strict control has proven otherwise. Around 60 people die annually in UK from gun related violence, compare that to the more than 10,000 deaths in USA! It’s made extremely hard to get a gun (and only certain types not fucking machine gun!) in the EU, including spending thousands for a license (inculding the reason WHY you need it) + mandatory training, regular background checks, check of criminal records, mental evaluation, a place to store it etc. etc. all resulting in a safer environment. Step up ur fucking game America!
Anyone who believes criminals can just GET guns the instant they decide to break the law, regardless of whether guns can be legally sold in the country or not, are really saying a lot about typical Americans.
Because this doesn’t happen in other countries. So you either have to accept that in other countries, these people CAN’T get their hands on weapons, or you have to suggest that only Americans want to commit mass shootings.
Thank you so so much for sharing whatâs happening here. People are shouting âwe want to voteâ and âno violenceâ while theyâre being attacked
Thereâs a lot of polling stations that lost the ballot boxes with the casted ballots. They took down the system to count votes so now weâre using paper, people can vote twice so basically nothing is valid.
The vote wonât be able to happen properly. All we got is violence and full hospitals. Please please share this, and if youâre from the EU contact your government tell them to get involved.
