The amount of parents I’ve met who’ve told me, as a soon-to-be father, how much kids ‘ruin your life’ makes me so fucking sad.
These are all people who had kids because it was ‘the next logical step’. Like they have this mentality of ‘Marriage? Check. House? Check. Well, guess we better have kids!’ And then bring small dependant humans into the world…and get upset when their lives are inconvenienced or changed as a result.
It really saddens me because there’s this damaging culture of children being part of the standard. So people who shouldn’t be parents (and I mean that in the simplest of terms - not in a judgemental way, but a ‘it’s just not for you’ way) feel pressured to have children and regret it. And then the poor child grows up feeling like a burden.
It’s not fair on anyone. The parents, the children.
As a post on this site once said - children and the decision to parent should be ‘hell yes or hell no’. If you think for any reason at all that you might not be big on raising kids, do not actively go out of your way to have kids. Having them won’t magically make you want them.
All the people I know who wanted - really wanted - their kids and to raise kids have said ‘it’s difficult but I LOVE it. I love being a parent.’
Can we please eliminate the idea that parenting should suck? And that having children is a necessary part of adulthood?
And can we please eliminate the idea that people who don’t want children are somehow lacking? And that those who do want children are doomed to misery?
Signed, a very excited father-to-be who understands it’s not something everyone wants or should want.
A reminder that turning in assignments for partial credit is better than not turning them in at all. It is. Even if you think you’ve done a bad job and are ashamed of your work, or it’s way overdue, you take whatever you can get. Partial credit dramatically improves your grade over a zero, and I’m always astounded by how often even the smartest kids don’t really comprehend that. 60% is worlds better than 0%. Even 10% is going to help you. Letter grades are misleading and are not created equal. “F"s are mathematically valuable. Turn that late assignment in.
Do not forget the 200 Lakota women and children that were murdered.
A friend and I were having a discussion about gun violence and such, probably about 2-3 years ago, and he asked me, “what do you think the largest mass murder was in us history” and I was like, “Virginia Tech right?”
And he said, “Wounded Knee. People like to think of it as some war theater, like it was a battle, but hundreds of innocent native Americans lost their lives for no reason than the bloodthirst of a couple white soldiers jacked into a frenzy.”
I always forget Wounded Knee. I think everyone else does too.
The tower on the island of Neuwerk was built between 1300 and 1310. It is the oldest surviving
secular building at the German coast and Hamburg’s last fortified
building. It served as an official lighthouse from 1814 to 2014 and is
now a private lighthouse of the Hamburg Port Authority without a
function for navigation.
Neuwerk is an island in the Elbe estuary off the coast of Cuxhaven. During ebb tide, holidaymakers like to take the 2.5 hour hike from Cuxhaven through the wadden sea, which has fallen dry apart from a tidal creek. Alternatively, horse-drawn carriages can be used. During the season, about 2000 guests visit the islandfor a day trip. In addition, 170 hotel beds, 240 straw beds, and camping facilities are offered for overnight stays.
