there’s something endlessly hilarious to me about the phrase “hotly debated” in an academic context. like i just picture a bunch of nerds at podiums & one’s like “of course there was a paleolithic bear cult in Northern Eurasia” and another one just looks him in the eye and says “i’l kill you in real life, kevin”
Tfw nazis literally burnt Hirschfeld’s (sp?) papers so we wouldn’t be in the history books
Like I wanna be really clear. Hirschfeld was literally moving to a depathologized explanation of trans women (inversion as variance not defect) and was advocating for providing trans women with HRT and surgery, all the while treat numerous trans women with hormones, in the early 1930s. Berlin had a thriving trans and gay community you have never heard of because the nazis destroyed it and the systematically erased evidence of it.
It’s not that trans women have only existed the last thirty years, it’s that you have been intentionally denied knowledge of our history by reactionaries who want to see us dead.
In 1946 renowned new zealander Harold Gilles preformed the first FtM sex reassignment surgeries.
1946. A lot longer than 30 years ago.
In 1951 he was able to preform the opposite, pioneering techniques for those who were transitioning from male to female.
So anyone who says its only 30 years… should look to a local plastic surgeon and ask about Mr Gilles.
1812 – James Miranda Barry graduated from the Medical School of Edinburgh University as a doctor. Barry went on to serve as an army surgeon working overseas. Barry lived as a man but was found to be female-bodied upon his death in 1865.
1932 – The News of the World published a story, ‘Amazing Change of Sex’, about a trans man from Sussex who transitioned ‘from Margery to Maurice’. Colonel Sir Victor Barker DSO (1895 - 1960) married Elfrida Haward in Brighton. Barker’s birth sex (female) is later revealed and the marriage is consequently annulled….
1936 – A 30-year-old British athletic champion, Mark Weston of Plymouth, transitioned from female to male. The story appeared in some national newspapers, including the News of the World (31 May 1936). The reportage was accurate and sensitive. In the words of L. R. Broster, the Harley Street surgeon who treated him, ‘Mark Weston, who has always been brought up as a female, is a male and should continue to live as such’.
There is some debate on James Barry but I still think this is relevant. All of these taken from wikipedia timeline of LGBT history. (I had a look a few months ago out of curiosity.)
also, the goddess Ishtar had trans priestesses known as the Assinnu (they castrated themselves, went by female pronouns, and wore female garb, and basically by any possible definition were trans women) and that’s WAY the fuck back in the BC’s
Africa stares in Neolithic
During my research for trans and gender non-conforming folks in history:
Elagabalus – c. 203-222 C.E. (Roman Empress)
Christina, Queen of Sweden – 1626-1689
Charlotte Clarke – 1713-1760
Chevalier d'Eon – 1728-1810
James Miranda Stuart Barry – 1789/1799-1865
Charley Parkhurst – 1812-1879
Joseph Lobdell – 1829-1912
Albert Cashier – 1843-1915
Jennie June – 1874-?
Harry Allen – 1882-1922
Lili Elbe – 1882-1931
Lucy Hicks Anderson – 1886-1954
Alan L. Hart – 1890-1962
Dörchen Richter – 1891-1933
Valerie Arkell-Smith (Victor Baker, John Hill, Jeffrey Norton) – 1895-1960
Sir Ewan Forbes, 11th Baronet – 1912-1991
Virginia Prince – 1912-2009
Billy Tipton – 1914-1989
Michael Dillon – 1915-1962
Willmer “Little Ax” Broadnax – 1916-1992
This is a list that is 20 out of hundreds. It is nowhere complete, and I left out a lot of people that are still alive, and a lot of ancient people about whom I need to do more research. But that’s just a small sampling of people I am researching for a project I’m working on.
Also, remember that many history books were/are largely written by cisgender people (primarily cis men) who were determined to perpetuate heteronormativity and likely ignored or erased any trans or gender non-conforming folks from their scholarship.
Also who was that one Pharaoh who was trans? I KNOW there was a trans Pharaoh but I cannot remember their name.
Hatshepsut, though idk if she was trans or not , because I believe she cross-dressed instead
Not to mention that the Greek Literally HAD A GOD WHO WAS THE PATRON TO TRANSGENDER FOLK.
Dionysus was raised up for a portion of his life as female in Zeus’ attempt to prevent Hera from finding the demigod. This, of course, failed, and Dionysus watched his foster parents go mad before his eyes (which also is said to be the roots of his insanity/sanity domain), but he decided that he’ll be there for children and adults whom did not feel comfortable with their certain domain
Also in Ancient Rome, there was a group of people whom would bleach and grow their hair out, castrate themselves, and wore female garments (above all taking the female pronouns) as apart of worshipping the goddess Cybele.
Transgender people of all kinds can be found in almost every civilization. They (and possibly me if I figure everything out properly) have been around for a long time, this isn’t some new kinky trend that people just want to jump onto
8/3 Today we picked the white apples. They have skins the color of old yellowed bones, and translucent flesh so that when you slice them open you can see the seeds through the flesh. Bone-and-glass apples, parchment apples, ghost apples.
They bruise easily, a purplish brown rather too similar to a bruise on human skin. If you pick one up, there’s a good chance the shapes of your fingertips will be marked on it the next day. I want to try writing words on them by pressing on them with a pencil eraser sometime.
They smell very faintly of perfume, maybe roses. They do not smell like apples. Apple maggots never infest them (probably because their growing time is too short to support the apple
maggot fly life cycle. It’ll be another month or two before the
rest of our apples are ripe).
They’re lovely. They are also disgusting. Mealy and soft, with no flavor whatsoever. They’re not sweet. They’re not even sour. It’s like a mouth full of wet cotton ball. I’m pretty sure I spit it out the first time I tried one.
I hope you all understand how weird this is: even the goats are reluctant to eat them. They’ll eat an apple or two, but then they lose interest (except in keeping the sheep from eating any, of course).
I have no idea why a previous resident planted the ghost-apple tree. If they have any flavor at all, only the restless dead can taste it.
I have to say, I’ve seen, researched, and planted a lot of apples in my time, but I have never seen anything like this.
My best guess is that your tree is a chance seedling with a genetic mutation, given that it is both leucistic/albinoid and early-ripening. I’d hazard a guess it’s also polyploid.
lazyevaluationranch: If you’re able to save some scion wood next Autumn, I’d be very interested in grafting a branch or two of this to one of my trees: not for the utility of it, so much as for the novelty and breeding possibilities.
White Transparent, Ghost or Spirit Apple, or Apples of Saint Peter. The Russian Petrovka group are all thin-skinned pale apples that ripen near the feast of Saint Peter, and are offered to Widows and orphans (first fruits) or to the graves of the recent dead of the winter, representing God’s Mercy after trial. Apple associated with Baba Yaga, and with foretelling the past or the future. This Transparent is from Coudersport, Pennsylvania, likely brought as seed with Russian immigrants.
Holy shit…
I just want a few of them because of their association with Baba Yaga.
“Opposites attract” should be reserved for like “she’s messy and he’s neat!” Not like “she’s supportive and he’s a soul-sucking toxic person!”
I have never reblogged anything so fast
also “she’s messy and he’s neat!” needs to extend to “but she’ll wash the dishes a few days out of the week and he doesn’t freak out if she leaves her clothes on the floor” not “and they argue incessantly and cannot reconcile their differences but stay together anyway because True Love means Conflict or else your relationship has no Passion and that’s Bad” like no please love and support your partners
