  • British taxation on America without sufficient representation: *results in Boston Tea Party, revolution, etc.*
  • White reactionary: These acts of property damage and militant resistance are justified and good =) because Britain was clearly tyrannical =) liberty needs to be fought for sweaty =)
  • Eight people control more wealth than half the world's people, climate change threatens to bring catastrophic damage to the planet, and a proto-fascist sexual predator was just made most powerful man in the world: *results in some shattered windows and limo bonfires, calls for revolution, etc.*
  • White reactionary: Um =\ violence is never the answer =/ protest is good and all =\ but this is taking it too far =/ can't you see you're just hurting any credibility you had =\ protests shouldn't interrupt my day =(

One thing I think is useful to conceptualize when thinking about the severity of depression is figuring out what counts as a ‘task’ to your brain

for example, healthy people outlining the tasks they need to do that day might be something like

- class
- work
- homework

if a healthy person is having a low energy day, maybe it becomes

- make breakfast
- go to class
- class
- go to work
- work
- come home from work
- work on an essay
- do 2 readings

a depressed person, on a high energy day will probably see that same day as

- make breakfast
- eat breakfast
- take meds
- shower
- get dressed
- walk to bus
- take bus
… etc

a depressed person, on a low energy day will see that same day as

- wake up
- get out of bed
- walk to bathroom
- use bathroom
- stand back up
- walk to kitchen
- open fridge
- take out juice
- set on counter
- go to cabinet
- reach up arm
- take down glass
- unscrew lid of juice carton
- pour juice
- drink the juice
- finish the juice
…etc

the sort of chronic exhaustion manifests in how each ‘task’ takes a certain amount of energy and when you have depression, what begins to take that amount of energy- and thus, cognitively count as a ‘task’- are smaller and smaller subdivisions of what other people consider tasks.

And the more ‘tasks’ you do, the less energy you have, and the smaller the subdivisions must be to take equivalent amounts of energy. And the longer that “to do” list of tasks is, the more exhausting and overwhelming and hopeless it feels, which creates a feedback loop of dysfunction.

So say our depressed person on a low energy day gets all the way to finishing their glass of juice. They’ve actually gotten through a lot of tasks! They’ve tried really hard.

But to a healthy person, even on a low energy day, that probably looks like not having done anything- not having gotten through any tasks. And when our depressed person is surrounded by healthy people, they will likely internalize that they haven’t done anything, and further that they can’t complete any tasks no matter how hard they try. And that feeds worthlessness and suicidal ideation

That, I think, is why it’s so important to encourage your depressed and chronically low-energy friends when they accomplish tasks, even if they’re operating at a level of subdivision that you don’t recognize. It is an accomplishment to get water and actually drink it for some folks. It is an accomplishment to get to class or to work.

And acknowledging how hard someone is trying and how much energy they’re putting towards accomplishing those tasks can make a huge difference in whether they feel worthless and hopeless or whether they feel like it’s worth it to keep doing what they can.

Anonymous: Not that it matter but don't these people realize that kids who are half white can come out looking completely like their white parents. Like my grandpa is an Afro- Latino and my mom looks completely like her mother whose mostly white. I don't understand why race mixing matters anyway πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈpeople love who they love.

my personal bullet points:

  • I run a small business online
  • removing net neutrality will limit my customer base
  • liming my customer base is a great way to kill my business
  • you don’t want to kill small businesses do you

also maybe worth mentioning: Portugal already did this. We / America can do better. (Patriotism etc.)

Children Die At Alarming Rate In For-Profit Foster Care

CHILDREN IN THE for-profit foster care system are dying at alarming rates, but the deaths are not being investigated, and autopsies are not even being attached to the now-closed case files, a two-year investigation has found.

I worked in a non profit facilty that housed children in the system and it was pretty terrible for a number of reasons so I can’t imagine what a for profit facility looks like. I worked in the field for years and didn’t even know there was such a thing (the ceo of the company i worked for was making high 6 figures while master’s level counselors were barely making 30 grand a year and most direct care staff working 2 or more jobs to survive btw). A lot kids need to be removed from their home, but unfortunately there is not enough adequate resources for them or their families so there’s never any improvement. And for the kids who dont need to taken from their homes (saw a lot of them too), putting them in this environment often exacerbates whatever behaviors or issues they had that brought the attention of social services in the first place. This is terrifying, especially for poc. I hope everyone wakes up and realizes that this country is so beyond morally bankrupt. Literally everything and everyone got a price. Disgusting.

PSA: this practice institutionalizes abuse and child neglect in the foster care system! This corruption should not be allowed!

Capitalism kills

I can personally attest to the harm that for profit Foster homes cause.

It’s that time of year again where everyone needs to realize retail workers are most likely working nonstop over the next month and you should be extra courteous to them.

And please, if possible, don’t shop on the holidays. The more you create demand for retailers to be open, the more likely they are to force their workers to give up THEIR holidays to sell you that turkey extra last minute :( We shouldn’t have to be at work every day for weeks until christmas and then come in midnight the 26th because they no longer have to even pay us holiday pay for that
