brought up the eel sex discovery again :/

speaking of: did you guys know that the mystery of eel breeding has finally been discovered??

the reproduction of eels has been a mystery since ancient fucking greece and they JUST discovered how they do it. scientists followed european eels that migrated thousands of kilometers from freshwater streams and rivers to the Sargasso sea (which is by north america) where the females released millions of eggs into the water and the males fertalized them and then the eels just died. because appearantly thats the end of their lifespan.

its insane. its bonkers. ALL european and american eels reproduce IN THE SAME PLACE. european eels swim across the north atlantic ocean just to reproduce. these eels live for about 20 years and go through multiple complex life stages but they begin and end their lives in the same place, despite how far they travel. and god dont get me started on other species of eels-

Love that time I brought up how “transvestite” used to be a term du jur (not the only term, but a well-known term) before it fell out of favor for transexual and then transgender and was immediately given the “um actually it’s always been a bad word sweaty :)” routine when like

image

[Image Description: the Wikipedia page for Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries". The opening paragraph says “Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) was a gay gender non-conforming street activist organization founded in 1970 by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson, subculturally famous New York City drag queens of color. STAR was a radical political collective that also…” the screencap cuts off the rest of the article. End ID]

To drive the point home, it later changed its name Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries to reflect the changing terminology preferences but Jesus fucking Christ learn your damn history

(This is also why terfs and other transphobes claiming that Marsha P. Johnson was “only” a transvestite in order to de-legitimize trans involvement in queer history, activism, and liberation is such bullshit because that was the fucking term back then and had Marsha not been murdered there’s good chance she’d be calling herself transgender now. Or not, there are trans elders who still call themselves transvestite and proudly so.)

The word was coined by the German LGBT pioneer Magnus Hirschfeld in 1910 and was used as an umbrella term for anyone who’d wear clothes that didn’t fit the gender they were assigned at birth.

He’d also issue so-called “transvestite certificates” for them that allowed them to wear those clothes in public without being arrested for public nuisance.

image

There was a magazine called “Das 3. Geschlecht” (The 3rd Sex) aimed at them, which was the first trans magazine in history. You can read the English translation of three of its issues here.

image

The lesbian magazine “Die Freundin” (The Girlfriend) also openly included transvestites and came with an insert called “Der Transvestit” at times (The Transvestite).

Guys this was a correct term IN MY LIFETIME. I’m only in my forties, come on. Remember your history, I’m begging.

Years ago I overheard (eavesdropped upon) a telephone conversation between a public parks official and a golf course owner.

Parks Official: No sir, you cannot

Parks Official: No. They are a protected species

Parks Official: You CANNOT shoot them

Parks Official: Or poison them, no. Or trap them

Parks Official: If you like, we can– no, I’m it. I’m the ranking official here. There’s nobody above me. My boss? You mean… the governor’s office? Sure, I guess. Okay bye

After he hung up, he gave me this thousand-yard stare before answering my unvoiced question.

“There’s a flock of flamingos at the 9th green disrupting golfers. He wanted permission to go out there with a shotgun and take care of matters, but sensed there might be… legal ramifications. So he called us.”

I laughed. “Does that happen often?”

“Oh, we get calls like that a couple times a month.”

you’d think so, but you’re actually the first 😭 im stuck at work feeling so bored and exhausted and brain foggy so i NEED the stimulation please 😭😭

What made you ship it? I mean. Look at them

What are your favorite things about the ship? They’re just absolute unhinged freaks but in a mostly harmless way towards each other - like obviously they are both capable of doing great harm (and in Garak’s case have done so, arguably some of Julian’s medmal moments are pretty bad too if not quite in the same way) but when you mash them together it’s like two volatile compounds get neutralized. And of course the narrative parallels are insane, all the more so for being accidental

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I think my sense of them as being actually good together, like for real, is unpopular to some. Tbh and this is going to sound bitchy, but if the only functional relationship you can imagine is one where everybody talks like a therapist and does things The Correct Way for optimum mental health and is aware of and actively working on all of their issues, yeah. I get it. I don’t see garashir in that way either. They work in a much messier way, a way that reflects ppl I know in real life, a way that I actually relate to. Garak is going to do insane drama queen shit and Julian’s just going to be like HaHa (shakes head) That’s My Husband ☺️ and he’s almost never going to take it personally when Garak always assumes the worst if he comes home late from work. Like it’s okay for people in relationships to be a little insane, and I love the way they complement each other. And that’s that on that

The largest mass shooting in American history was a hate crime against gay people. Don’t ever forget that.

June 12, 2016. Putting a date on this for when it gets reblogged months from now by people who think the post is about something from 30, 40 years ago.

I am a survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting, having grown up in Orlando and just turned 20 a month prior. If you didn’t know, there were several families who refused to claim the bodies of their relatives due to their sexuality. One family even had their relative’s name removed from the memorial. Murdered by the same hate with which their families reject them in both life and death.

Many, many people celebrated Pulse. We were told we deserved it. That it was God’s punishment for our sin of loving the same sex. We are sent messages like these I received in 2018:

We in the community often call the victim count 49+ to include the survivors who couldn’t live with the pain.

The event was never officially declared a hate crime or targeted homophobic attack and is rarely listed as one in databases.

At our vigils for those slaughtered, Extremist Christian groups showed up to protest, holding signs like this:

ID: Me kissing a woman I was casually seeing in front of an angry looking man with a “Sodomy is Sin” sign.

Please understand how much more than just a mass shooting this was. We are still to this day harassed and told we deserved it by some.

This year was the sixth anniversary. The first couple years I received dozens of messages checking in on me on 6/12. Year 5 got enough news coverage for people to think to reach out to me. This year it was my therapist, the woman I kissed in that photo, and a couple of other gun violence survivor friends. People are forgetting already.

With the 7 year anniversary <2 weeks away, I figured I’d reblog this
