My friend has been ranting (affectionate) for the past 10 minutes about how his biggest gripe with star trek is the lack of armor and general protection in dangerous environments

choice quotes (paraphrased):

“that Bajoran got stabbed with a pitchfork!”

“Do you know how much protective gear an electrician has to wear??? (he’s an electrician) and people working in engineering just assume everything is fine bEcAusE iT’s ThE FuTUre”

“I’m not saying Warhammer, I’m just saying those pyjamas don’t protect against a bat-leth!”

“Is it reinforced pyjama???”

“They’re working in dangerous environments, not even protective goggles???”

“Helmets?”

“No helmets. Why go into battle without a helmet?”

“If you’re somewhere sparks might fly, you wear goggles, that’s 1-0-1 guys!”

“That guy in that episode with Jake and Bashir, he was wearing armor and that’s why he didn’t die immediately… he did die of course…”

“The Cardassians aren’t right about a lot… but their armor is also kinda shit.”

“And another thing… do they ever wear helmets when they step out on planets? sure they might measure for M-planets and air, but there should be more precaution :( “

“… it’s just… they’re just basic protection things you know”

If not DaForge, then explain this bit from “Elementary, Dear Data.” No, you definitely can’t “4:3 aspect ratio” their way out of it :P

In this super-long shot in the middle of a big empty street, they stand practically chest-to-chest talking for 20 seconds.

More unnecessary closeness while talking…

Then when they hear footsteps, they do this quick grab of each other before running off?

Come on, boys, there’s no need for this :P

Police, for a second time in 26 hours, rushed to the Georgia home of Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Thursday for another false shooting report, authorities said.

A person, calling him or herself “Wayne Greene,” reached out electronically to a suicide crisis center to report gunfire at 2:53 a.m., police in Rome, Georgia, said.

Swatted again last night. — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene🇺🇸 (@RepMTG) August 25, 2022ALT

Greene is married with three children, but none of those immediate family members are named “Wayne.”

The person who made the call through the chat advised that they ‘came out as trans-gender and claimed they shot the family,” according to a Rome police report. “They also claimed, If anyone tried to stop me from shooting myself, will shoot them.’ They advised 'they would be waiting for us.’

A responding officer spoke to Greene at her door and “alerted her with the reason why we were there,” police said.

Greene has a long history of antagonizing the LGBTQ community and its supporters, recently backing a proposal to ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors.

This was the second time Greene was targeted with a fake call in as many days.

A 911 call placed at 1:03 a.m. on Wednesday prompted officers in Rome, about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta, to respond to Greene’s home because of “a subject being shot multiple times,” police said.

Making a false report of a crime in progress just to draw police to the scene is known as “swatting.”

Even though Thursday’s swatting incident came via an electronic chat, rather than a telephone call, police said they had no choice but to act immediately.

We do take these calls seriously,” Assistant Chief Debbie Burnett said in a statement to NBC News. “It is a shame people don’t understand the gravity of this type of action.”

Both everyday Americans and celebrities have been swatting victims, with the most infamous incident happening in December 2017 as Wichita, Kansas, police officers fatally shot a man whose home was falsely implicated in a shooting.

An Ohio gamer, upset about a $1.50 bet while he was playing “Call of Duty: WWII” online, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for recruiting a prankster to make the deadly, bogus emergency call.

In the past decade, entertainers such as Tom Cruise, Ryan Seacrest, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, Sean “Diddy“ Combs and Rihanna have all been targeted with hoax police reports.

Sometimes I see people accuse Star Trek: The Original Series of queerbaiting or wondering why they didn’t just make Kirk/Spock canon. So to put things in perspective for you the last episode aired on the 3rd of June 1969, the Stonewall Riots started 25 days later on the 28th of June 1969.

Bro someone told me he could never watch TOS because he wasn’t a fan of queer baiting and I felt really bad about it but I laughed in his face 😳

TOS had to fight for an interracial kiss, there was no way in Hell that they could have gotten away with a gay one.

Not to mention that while Roddenberry found the concept “interesting” when it was brought up later, he didn’t actually intend for K/S to be a thing. He never discouraged it, but it wasn’t something that was on his radar (and why would it be? He was a straight white man in the 1960s).

Queerbaiting requires a certain level of malice aforethought. In this case it was a case of what I’m going to call gentle ignorance—he had no idea it would come across to fans as homoerotic, but once it was brought to his attention he was like “huh. Okay.”

I saw George Takei speak at my college and he actually brought up the fact that after the Kirk/Uhura kiss he asked if there could be a same-sex kissing scene and was told no, because even the interracial kiss almost got the show booted.

When we talk about how Korrasami walked so The Owl House could fly, we’re not seeing too much of the history of creators pushing for representation that was never aired.

These kids really don’t know just how illegal gay stuff was until really recently.

The American Psychiatric Association didn’t remove Homosexuality from the DSM until 1973, y’all. And it’s ok if you didn’t know that because we’re purposefully cut off from our history.

Yeah, and I’m pretty sure Star Trek came out right after The Lavender Scare, too😩

The bus driver in The Simpsons stares ahead with an annoyed expression on his face and says: “Don’t make me tap the sign.” The bus driver points to a sign inside the bus. The sign is edited to read, “queerbaiting is not the same thing as queer coding - queerbaiting requires the intent to mislead viewers in order to increase queer viewership without alienating cishet audiences, while queer coding is more often than not creators’ response to a cultural and media environment that does not allow for explicit canon queer representation.” /end image description]
