Brb, gonna go cry. This is just over 1/3rd of my debt since I did get Pell Grants.

Guys this last point is HUGE. So many borrowers will actually have an end in sight now.

As someone with outstanding debt from being a non-traditional student, frankly every part of this plan is HUGE. Not enough, but huge compared to everything jackass has done so far, and really capable of impacting peoples’ lives.

I was able to pay half of my yearly tuition due to having had a much better job then, which vanished permanently during early COVID.

So after graduation I was left with just over 17,000 dollars in primary. (Peanuts compared to a lot of borrowers, I know.)

If you don’t have student loans, you may not really get how bad the interest rates are. Before this bill I stood to pay 30,000 over the next twenty years. Yes, that’s more than half again in interest.

Now, this bill is targeted to people like me who have small outstanding loans, low income and so on. I benefit more than a vast majority of borrowers because this will wipe out more than half of what I owe, cap my payments at something ludicrously small… something like 50 bucks a month, and forgive me the remainder at just about the age my father retired at. I’m hardly the typical case.

BUT! Every part of this does benefit a huge number of borrowers. If you make less than, I think it was 120,000 a year, as most graduates do, you are going to have $10,000 or $20,000 (if you had Pell grants) shaved off your outstanding debt, UP TO THE OUTSTANDING AMOUNT. That’s not nearly enough but it’s really something.

Your monthly income-based payment is capped at 5% of your monthly discretionary income, as opposed to 10% before. That’s precious breathing room for a huge number of working people, and it really, truly makes a difference.

After ten years, people who have been paying will be forgiven. Like, that’s the wham line here. Most of us stand to spend the next several decades paying, and to have it reduced to a single decade will let a lot of young people escape debt with a lot of their adult lives left.

And lastly, yes, while you’re paying you won’t be accruing interest, which is ENORMOUS when you consider that there are people who had $50,000 primary, paid on it at punishing rates for twenty years, and now have $70,000 outstanding.

YOU HAVE TO APPLY BY THE END OF THE YEAR.

I can’t stress how important this could be for you. If you have any federal student loans at all, follow the link above and apply. If you’re eligible, you won’t be turned away if you get that form in by the end of the year. This is being billed explicitly as a “one time” cancellation, so get it while it’s hot.

In some ways this is the least I would have accepted, but it’s something and I need to know that people are taking advantage of it.

Go read the full text and if you’re eligible, apply, please.

Here is the DIRECT LINK for where you need to go.

when i was reading the book entangled life which is about fungi and the author merlin sheldrake said that once he got his first author copies he was going to dampen the pages and use them to grow oyster mushrooms and yeast and then use the yeast to brew beer and then drink the beer with the mushrooms to complete the cycle of fungal knowledge. i was like really and truly this guy gets it

he ate his own words.

But really and truly. The cycle is not complete until he dies.

I’m not sure how or why, but this is goth as FUCK.

Mycology really is the most hardcore of the biological sciences. We got:

  • Mushrooms that alter the DNA of other mushrooms they meet into becoming clones of the parasitic mushroom (they’re delicious).
  • Mushrooms that will kill you by literally destroying your DNA similar to how radiation poisoning works. They look like several edible mushrooms and the flavor is apparently ‘Not Bad’, but eating even a flake of one will kill you slowly over the course of about 5 days. There is no cure.
  • Mushrooms that many people report will let you meet God and is extremely effective at treating depression and PTSD. Flavor passable.
  • Mushrooms that are so biologically similar to human flesh that people who have eaten them have sometimes developed allergies to thier own bodies. According to the few cannibals that have tried them, the flavor and texture is indistinguishable from human flesh as well.
  • Two identical-looking mushrooms. The european one is a delicious food staple, the American one is lethal within minutes of ingestion. I was put off eating mushrooms as a child after I lost a whole family of neighbors to a misidenitified hungarian stew.
  • Mushrooms that seem to absorb radiation from contaminated areas and thrive on it (No Reports back on flavor yet. I imagine it’s a bit hot)

Misidentified stew killed an entire family *horrified look*

among the endearments I’ve considered for Julian to use for Garak I initially discarded “my dove” but now I realize he would use it as a joke

  1. Garak is grey and plump cheeked like a dove
  2. He is a violent bitch, which makes it ironic
  3. Sad: ‘pigeons’ are actually domesticated rock doves which have been abandoned enmasse and disease and injury are common

gods the first ds9 episode is so fucking raw. the dialogue between sisko & the wormhole aliens, the way his emotions just rise and fall and rise again with every memory that they push him into. you can see him understanding more through his own explanations. they ask, time, what is this? and he isn’t sure how to respond at first, because how do you explain a concept so basic yet complex? how do you explain the most vital, integral part of the nature of your existence to someone who has no frame of reference?

but as he speaks, his face lights up and he changes, because he’s understanding, now. not until this moment did he even have to think about how the nature of linear time so affects the human spirit! but as he speaks, he gets it! we are explorers, he says! the game isn’t worth playing if you already know what shape it will take in the end! and he only realizes the weight & beauty of what he’s saying as the words leave his mouth! linear time, the cycle of life and death, all of this, it’s so wonderful and sacred and intricate. but we don’t realize it, because to us, it’s just the default.

and with this realization he’s almost giddy, this is first contact and he’s learning more about his own species, and himself, just through this one dialogue! how incredible is that! but. but they keep bringing him back to the day that jennifer died. you exist here, they’re saying. and he doesn’t get it. until he does.

the sheer fucking power of no, it’s not linear. it’s not. that’s only how we perceive it. the realization of how trauma interacts with time, the way our own brains manage to subvert the laws of this linear existence and bring us back, back, back, to one moment, one searing moment, so that we just exist there, and we’re moving through this life getting physically older and older but in every other sense we are still living and breathing in that moment. it’s terrifying and still somehow unmistakable human.

and all of this in the first episode …whew.
