Yeah so, fair enough. None the less I still doubt they’d have had such a clear idea of their specific birth intervals vs the time of year they give birth unless they were also tracking individuals over multiple years.

@gormasabzi beyond that, I guess consider the importance of birth time vs gestation. Knowing when they give birth, as wild animals they hunt rather than domestic animals they’re breeding, is more important than the specifics of time between mating and birth.

@gormasabzi palaeolithic hunter-gatherers would likely know the time an animal gives birth in the year but not necessarily the details of gestation periods. I’d have to check but I don’t think you can look at an elephant one year into a pregnancy and just tell it’s knocked up.
