It is a good idea to reform society such that we work to prevent crime instead of just punishing it, but even from what you say here it is clear that we can’t stop 100% of crime and need some way to deal with unrepentant criminals. I feel like these ideas can be executed better by working to reform the prison system, and changing society, so that we need fewer prisons and less repeat offenders. Going for such a radical change as abolishing prisons is too idealistic.
